+254 Rising, an entrepreneurship hackathon in Nairobi designed to support youth who are interested in creating startups in the mobile technology field, will host this year’s hackathon in Nairobi.
The event, which will take place from May 16-18 will see dozens of talented young Kenyan entrepreneurs compete in a fast paced, three-day race-against-the-clock to imagine new mobile products, tools and services that could form the basis of a brand new startup.
The hackathon will not include people with existing businesses, or ideas that you’ve already spent a lot of time developing. The goal of +254 Rising is to create new businesses that fill market needs and bring more entrepreneurs into the African business ecosystem. This will be done by creating opportunities to envision startups from scratch, in an environment that allows you to pivot, sprint, iterate, and test your way to a viable business.
Teams will ideate and develop concepts; work with mentors from places like Silicon Valley; build prototypes; test, iterate, and refine these prototypes; and pitch their business ideas to a judging panel, live audience, and online crowd that will be watching online and voting via an online platform.
Recommended skill sets that should be represented on your team include, but are not limited to, UI/UX design, programming/coding, branding/marketing, and management/business skills. We will provide a designer for each team.
The winning team will receive US$5K for seed funding and six months of mentorship and training at a startup incubator in Nairobi.
+254 Rising is being organized by Affinis Labs (www.affinislabs.com) and co-sponsored by Dahabshiil and US Embassy Nairobi.
