Metacloud to be Acquired by Cisco

Metacloud, a cloud service company in Pasadena, is to be acquired by networking giant Cisco Systems Inc. of San Jose.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Metacloud employees will join Cisco’s cloud infrastructure and managed services department.

Metacloud offers the widely used open-source platform called OpenStack, but it gives the option to host it through private servers. That way, companies have the same flexibility and scalability they would get from public clouds, but their data stays in-house.

Cisco said in March it would invest $1 billion in cloud computing services to boost its intercloud strategy and create a “network of clouds” with partners.

“Cloud computing has dramatically changed the IT landscape,” said Hilton Romanski, senior vice president of corporate development, in a statement. “We believe Metacloud’s technology will play a critical role in enabling our customers to experience a seamless journey to a new world of many clouds, providing choice, flexibility, and data governance.”

Metacloud has raised $25 million in total funding since launching in 2011. It last secured a $15 million Series B round in May, a raise which included new investors Pelion Venture Partners, Silicon Valley Bank and UMC Capital as well as previous investors AME Cloud Ventures, Canaan Partners and Storm Ventures.

The deal is expected to close early next year.
