For the first (and possibly) last time, Apple has launched not one, but two phones in a span of one day. First it was the iPhone 5s, and now, it is the anticipated iPhone 5C, launched by Tim Cook on 10th September in the Cupertino headquarters. During the official announcement, Apple proudly showed off the 5C in its five new vibrant colours.
The pre orders for the 5C are due to open up on 13th September. However it will be ready for shipment along with the iPhone 5s a week later on the 20th.
Currently, the iPhone is priced at 99USD (on a two year contract) for the 16GB model and 199USD for the 32GB one. It is not available in 64GB unlike the 5s.
The main features of the iPhone 5C are listed below.
The iPhone 5C has a body with dimensions 124.4 x 59.2 x 9 mm and weighs roughly 132 grams. The screen is the same as the one in iPhone 5s; an LED-backlit IPS LCD with a capacitive touchscreen. The size of the screen is 640 x 1134 pixels packed in 4 inches resulting in a pixel density of 326ppi. It is enabled with multitouch.
The device has a colourful polycarbonate design and is reinforced with a steel structure. One of the designers, Jony Ive calls it ‘beautifully, unapologetically plastic’. It is currently available in the vibrant colours of blue, yellow, pink, white and green.
iPhone 5C houses a A6 processor with a Dual-core 1.3 GHz CPU and a PowerVR SGX 543MP (with triple core graphics) GPU. Like the iPhone 5s, the card slot is absent from this model too. But it comes with an internal memory of 16/32 GB along with a 1 GB RAM.
iPhone 5C is equipped with a non removable Li-Ion battery which has up to 10 hours of 3G talk time. Apart from this, it has a music play of about 40 hours and a stand by battery lasting to 250 hours, all which is very similar to the iPhone 5s. 5C also has a 3.5mm audio jack with a 2.0 version of USB. Other than this, it also has an in built 4.0 version (with A2DP) of Bluetooth. It has a support for the dual band WiFi and LTE as well.
The iPhone 5C also comes with the latest iOS 7 pre-installed into it. The browser being used is Safari, the one present in all the Apple devices. It also comes with sensors such as gyro, proximity, compass and accelerometer.
The camera present in the iPhone 5C is an 8MP iSight unit accompanied with Back Illuminates Sensor (BSI), hybrid RI filter and a 5 element lens. It also has autofocus and LED flash, simultaneous image and video recording, face detection and geo –tagging.
The secondary camera is actually better at 1.2 MP with a 1.9 µm size and BSI. This promises a better performance in low lighted areas and is equipped with face detection as well. FaceTime is relatively more convenient here due to a larger size and can be facilitated using either Wi-Fi or cellular data.
To highlight the colourful designs of the phone, Apple is coming with a number of official phone cases with their own bold colours and styles, so as to expose the 5C hue underneath. These are currently prices at 29 USD.
