Samsung Galaxy Grand has made quite a few waves since its launch. It had in its share, the comparison with the likes of Galaxy SIII and Galaxy Note II. The philosophy behind the device has been to bring the large screens in the midrange smartphones, so that people can enjoy the real estate freedom of Note II and the apps & features of Galaxy SIII. The launch of a closely related phone, Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro, has also made quite a bit of news. So, what are the differences between these two devices? Let’s find out!
Galaxy Grand is a huge phone. It is 143.5 mm tall and is about 9.6 mm thin. Grand Quattro on the other hand, is shorter by almost a centimeter and is a wee bit thicker at 9.7 mm. In other areas of design, they look like the typical Galaxy phones– Rounded corners, all-plastic body, a home button in the middle and back and option buttons. No extra points for any of these phones in terms of design.
Low resolution display has been the ailing factor for Grand. It has a gigantic 5 inch display, with a resolution of 480-by-800 pixels, which makes it pixel density a menial 187 ppi. On the other hand, Grand Quattro has the same resolution, but a smaller screen of size 4.7 inches. The screen still has a low pixel density of 199 ppi, but is a little bit better than Grand. In other terms, the displays are identical. The displays for the both the phones are horrendous. There is really no point in giving a large screen with a low resolution, because the icons and everything will take larger space.
Galaxy Grand Quattro comes with an 8 MP rear shooter, coupled with LED flash, and a front facing VGA camera. The rear camera can record videos at 480p. Galaxy Grand on the other hand, has an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash, and can record videos at 1080p full HD. Along with this, there’s a 2 MP front facing camera. Galaxy Grand has a better camera suite, especially the full HD video recording.
This is the juicy part for comparison. Grand comes with a dual core 1.2 GHz Cortex A9 processor, while Quattro comes with a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor. The difference in processing would be clearly felt when you try multitasking. While both of the phones have same RAM, the overall handling of many apps in parallel would not be the strong point for Galaxy Grand.
Software & Connectivity
Both of the devices come loaded with Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2. Galaxy Grand Quattro has a markedly slower data speed at HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, while Grand has HSDPA 21 Mbps speed. In other connectivity specs, the two phones are almost identical. The obvious advantage of having the best of the Samsung apps, is an icing on the cake for these two phones.
In terms of battery, Grand comes with a 2100 mAh battery while, Grand Quattro comes with a 2000 mAh battery. That being said, Grand has a larger screen, slower processor, and Quattro has a faster processor and a smaller screen. The tradeoffs of power consumption are subtle, which means that the final difference between battery performances won’t be very discernible.
All in all, Galaxy Grand Quattro is an improved version of Grand in terms of processing and display. The only downside to Quattro is its camera suite. But if you don’t take a lot of pictures and don’t video chat a lot, you would be equally fine with both the phones. The Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro is priced at around INR 20000, while Grand comes at around INR 18000. The difference is actually quite low, if you compare the things that you get with Quattro. Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro is a better choice that Grand for almost all sorts of users. So, if you are deciding to buy a phone, go for Grand Quattro.
