Sony has been storming phones in the market right now, just like every other manufacturer in the market today. You buy a device and think that ‘okay it is going to be the best for a long time now’ and after a few weeks, one or the other manufacturer comes up with even better version of their devices. We recently saw Qualcomm come up the Snapdragon 800 chipset and some devices based on it came out in light. The recently launched Xperia Z Ultra runs on the same chipset and is an immensely powerful device. Also LG is coming up with the G2 running on the same chipset. The G2 is a successor to the LG Optimus G.
Sony is ready with yet another high end device and there is word out that they might unveil their next flagship device in an event in Berlin on September 4. The device will be called the Xperia Honami and according to the leaked specs, it is one hell of a device.
Design and Display
When viewed up front, the device looks almost the same as the Xperia Z. Also the dimensions are almost the same as even the display size is same as the Z. The front face is neat black and the Sony logo sits on top. On the right spine there is the familiar aluminum power key like on many other Sony devices. Below the power key is the volume rocker. It also has got the camera key that the Xperia Z misses on. On the back sits the camera on left with the LED flash right below it.
The display on the device won’t be much different from that found on the Xperia Z. it would be 5 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen capable of 16 M colours. It would have a resolution of 1920 x 1080 which gives a display density of 441 pixels per inch. It would have the usual enhancements like the mobile Bravia engine 2. It would also have the X Reality chip. What it does is that it processes standard definition content and makes it look better on the full HD display of the device.
This device would run on the latest version of Qualcomm that is the Snapdragon 800. Although there is no clear word about the hardware yet but we are expecting hardware similar to the Xperia Z ultra. It would have a quad core processor running at a clock speed of 2.2 GHz, an Adreno 330 GPU and 2 GB of RAM to go with it. The internal memory would be 16 GB but the device would support expandable storage, upto 64 GB probably. It is supposed to have a 3000 mAh battery to power the hardware.
The usual connectivity of the phone should include options like 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC will all be present. The device might run on the previous version of Jelly Bean that is the 4.2 for now but that isn’t a really big deal as being a flagship device, it would be updated as soon as they can. The interface would be the usual Xperia UI and it has been done nicely. They add some handy shortcuts and some cool customization options and that is a really good thing.
This is another spot where the device improves upon the Xperia Z and even on the Z ultra. It has got a 20 megapixel Exmor RS rear camera and will have a Sony G-lens. Also it might have the BIONZ image processor which further improves the image quality and we see this processor in many Sony point and shoot cameras. We are very sure that the camera will be just amazing and will surely appeal to the photographer in you. And it is not only the image resolution that has gone up. Now we aren’t very sure about this bit but the phone might support video recording at 4K. The camera will have the usual software options and camera modes. It would also support burst shots at high fps.
A while back we saw manufacturers coming up with 4K TV sets and we were like ‘where are you going to find 4K content’. Now you know that if you can’t find anything over the internet, you can make a 4K movie at your home and enjoy it on your high resolution TV set.
Not only the device would feature high end features but we feel that Sony would carry forward the rugged features from the Z to this device too. The Xperia Z has got IP55 rating thus it is waterproof to low pressure jets from all directions and also IP58 which means it can survive for 30minutes under 1.5m of freshwater. Also the Z has got IP5X rating for being dust resistant. We are expecting the Honami to carry the same if not more.
Release date and Price
The phone will most probably be announced in an event in Berlin on 4th September. Samsung is going to unveil the next Note device on the same day and would be a tough device to beat. Once the Honami is unveiled, it will make it to the market in a few months. There are some other devices coming in the market which boast of the similar hardware and have something or the other good about it. The war among the flagship devices is going to be even tougher now. The LG G2 would also be a worthy rival for this device and would give it a tough competition. Though the Honami appears to better than most other devices with its camera and the ruggedness. Prices can’t be confirmed at the moment but expect it to be a huge number. Maybe even more than the Xperia Z Ultra. Worth it?
