The Key Skills Needed To Be An Effective Project Manager

A project manager must co-ordinate a variety of tasks that the assignment requires. This work generally includes budgeting, scheduling, designing plans, team assembly, team management, problem resolution and performance reporting. Along the way, the project manager is involved in a variety of smaller tasks that allows the project to come to a successful completion. These tasks require a wide range of skills that may be required on a daily basis.

Technical Knowledge
In order for a project manager to be effective, he or she will require an understanding of the technical components of the task. This understanding will give the manager a clear idea of the problems that may be involved in the execution of the project. In addition, the project manager will have the contacts needed to resolve technical problems as they arise.

Computer Skills
The effective project manager will also know a number of computer programs that can assist him with scheduling, budgeting and organizational tasks. In addition, industry-specific software programs may be needed in order to analyze the project’s progress.

Critical Thinking Skills
Project managers must have the ability to collate data, analyze its importance in the overall scheme of the project and find the methods by which the plan is executed in real time. The ability to develop a working plan for the project requires extensive critical thinking skills, as well as an ability to find alternative means of getting tasks done when problems arise.

Team Management Skills
One of the most important tasks of the project manager is the ability to put together a team to see the project to completion. This task requires the ability to find and grow team members that work together well to undertake a variety of tasks.

Communication Skills
A great deal of the project manager’s job involves communication with all levels of people within the project scope. Both effective listening and speaking skills assist in providing critical information to team members. Good communication can help to alleviate problems that arise in implementing plans and assessing progress.

Negotiation Skills
Project managers must also have a variety of negotiation skills in order to work effectively with vendors, accountants, senior managers and team members to acquire resources for the project and ensure that proper allocation of these resources. He or she must be able to recognize different negotiation styles and participate appropriately when differences arise.

Financial Skills
The project manager must allocate the budgeting for various tasks within the project and account for any problems that might take it over the budget limits. This skill requires a solid understanding of mathematics, as well as a clear knowledge of business accounting.

Problem Management

It is inevitable that projects will have problems. The ability to maintain a sense of calm competence while finding solutions to these problems is a key skill in being an effective project manager. The ability to research quickly, find individuals that can help with the problem and keep solutions under budget are important factors in any project’s completion.

These skills ensure that the project manager can deal with the everyday problems and processes that are common in the execution of any typical project plan.
