In Political Science we speak of Globalization. Globalization refers to the interconnectedness of the world. No country now exists in isolation; we are all now connected mainly through technology. Technology has allowed for people on different ends of the world to speak in real-time either over the convectional telephone or cellular phone which is now categorised as a costly method of communication. Hence the emergence of an economical communication tool through advancements in social media and innovative services such as Skype.
The availability and access to a multitude of device or internet based social media platforms have undoubtedly opened up more economic and accessible information sharing platforms and communication mediums. Due to its “free” and world-wide usage, social media has become an important element of conducting business in a modernised and technology based world.
Trend analysis informs me that more companies are starting to buy into social media platforms and using them as strong and effective marketing tools. Gone are the days when social media was something only for teenagers and socialising, social media is growing and advancing at an alarming rate and those who observe world and business trends are cognisant of such and are aligning themselves with this trend.
The reason is simple, social media has millions of users worldwide and it is dirt cheap and easy to use and understand. Using your handheld device, you can communicate with hundreds, thousands and even millions of individuals all over the world in real time.
Social media also makes use of a “share” option as it is known on Facebook or “retweet” as it is known on Twitter. This allows any user who gains knowledge of your social media communiqué to pass this information on, basically quoting the communiqué and allowing other individuals that they are connected to, to view this communiqué.
Social media has developed and evolved over time and is now an essential business networking tool where all entrepreneurs can meet under 1 roof and share ideas or information that is of relevance and value to them.
Technology had seen the high usage of email as a primary business communication tool. Mobile device manufacturers became aware of this a long time ago and since business is fast paced, manufacturers ensured that emails are delivered directly to your mobile device and you are notified instantly. Gone are the days when you had to access a computer and login in order to view an email or attachment and reply instantly. However it seems that social media is replacing email communication gradually as social media creates a larger network of communication whereas email is generally a communication tool between 2 individuals or a small group of individuals.
The power and reach of social media cannot be disputed nor contested by any other communication medium that is currently available, even if such a medium were to see the light of day, the millions of current and loyal social media users worldwide are a force to reckon with.
Social Media is here to stay and as entrepreneurs all around the world, we should embrace it and understand its value in business as a marketing and communication tool. The choice to shy away or neglect this powerful business tool can only be to your demise.
